Above is - On the corner of Wh1t3 and My rtl3 St M0rd1all0c. This was some sort of engineering place. There's two separate buildings, they're only small but ok for a look around.

Above is - Two1six B4Y Rd, H1ghett. It used to be a clothes factory. It's pretty trashed, but there's office space at the front and two large sheds out the back.

If you get a chance and haven't already done so. Head to the top floor at Myers for a good view of the building they're pulling down between Little Bourke and Lonsdale St. It's a shame I didn't think of it sooner so I could've got better pics.

There's so many great artists out there. Here's 2 artists that inspire me. No matter how many times I see the same old pics I'm still in awe of their work. Both, I'd suppose you'd call "environmental artists". By 'environmental' I mean they manipulate the environment around them. One does this by working with nature, while the other one uses brute force.

I'll start with 'Andy Goldsworthy'. A delicate touch and a keen eye for the art in nature. There's no nails or glue used here. Everything is intertwined, balanced, or pegged together using sticks, thorns and whatever else nature can provide. There's more "here".

And I'll finish with 'Gordon Matta Clark'. He creates by destroying. He believed in social activism through creative acts. He was deeply concerned with the abandonment of buildings and the fate of urban communities. He gave these empty spaces new life and meaning. There's more "here".

There's just 2 main wings with the usual classrooms, office space, store rooms, etc. Down one end is the toilet block and shelter shed. At the front of the sch001 there's a small k1nderg4rten. It's just one big room with a couple smaller rooms attched for office, store, etc.

OK here we go again for 2012. Due to the problem I had with a previous post I've decided to break up the address of locations by using letters, numbers, and broken words so that (hopefully) it doesn't show up in search engine searches. So here we go:

Former g1ass b0tt1e works factory, twenty B00 ker st. Sp0t w00d. (next door to sc1encew0rks). This place is pretty hard to get into but well worth the effort. It's massive! There's a few large sheds with beautiful textures of flaking paint, timber and steel work. Take a mask because there is asbestos present. Above the gatehouse it goes up about 3 levels. There's office space, kitchen area, change room and so on. Down along Simc 0ck Ave. on the upper levels there seems to be a whole lot of self contained units where perhaps workers stayed on site. There's not much in terms of machinery, but there were a couple of large long oven / dryer type things in one of the sheds. The site is being cleaned up at the moment, but It seems to have been empty for some time as I came across a couple old pvsn pieces from '05. There's more info on the site "here".

Office space, 20 Chifley Dve, Preston. Not really an abando, they've gutted it, and it looks like they might be going to re-furbish the place. There's not much to see. It's set out over two levels with a courtyard / atrium in the middle. There is a small building about half way down the site, (change room, toilet, etc) but again not much to see. I think the building might be part of the Grollo complex that is next door to it.

Industrial Galvanisers, 28-38 Albert St. Preston. There's 4 or 5 really big sheds spread over a large site. There's a small office area at the front, but that was pretty well boarded up. And there is also a small lunch and change room area in the centre of the site. A couple sheds are pretty corroded due to the chemicals used. Overall not much to see but ok for a walk around if your bored and got nothing else to do.

TA Duckworth Engineering, 171 Hyde St. Yarraville. As the name suggests it was some sort of engineering place. 2 levels at the front with kitchenette and office spaces. Out the back are 2 large open areas. One side looks like it was probably used for steel works, while the other side may have been used for timber works. Not a huge place but good for a wander around. Joshua Pitt Tannery (soon to be "The Cottery" housing development), 52 Gadd St. Northcote. Fairly large place over two levels. Not really much to see but ok for a wander around. Across the road is another smaller factory that is also part of it. There's some more history on the place "here". It should be there for a few more months, so get in before the developers rip it's soul out.
And take a torch if you want to explore the dark bits.

Printers / Shop front / Workshop thingy all together on one large site - Unfortunately I bumped into some squatters that were living in the shop front part and they asked me not to tell too many people about the place. So I'll respect their wishes. The printing place was probably the best of the lot. Downstairs had a large open room at the rear and office space at the front. While upstairs there was a couple small rooms (not much to see). Next to the printers was a big cleared block with two small houses on it. One was set up like an office while the other one might have been used for living. Next to the houses was some sort of workshop area with a few small rooms. And finally the shop front, I didn't actually go in because of the squatters, but it's a double storey place with a couple of medium sized rooms out the back. I managed to sneak a peek in the rooms out the back which weren't that interesting. Thanks HC.

Mechanics workshop, 66 St. Georges Rd. Northcote. Not much to see in there. The Building on the corner of St. Georges and Gordon Gve. was the office area. There's also another building next to it. It's just one long room which I assume was the workshop area.

Office space, 200 Bell St, Preston (crn Lahinch St). I was lucky enough to get into this place. It's usually really well boarded up, but recently there was an opening that stayed there for a couple weeks. Unfortunately it's been boarded up again. I think this place was used by Ericsson at some point because there was a bit of stuff laying around with their name on it. It's huge inside and it's like a maze. It's set out over 2 levels. The lower levels are pretty dark so you'll need a torch if you get in. Upstairs is more office space that is well lit up and you can access the roof where there are a couple of plant rooms. There is another seperate building on the site, but I think it's still in use as there were workers using that part of the building.

Student accomodation, located at the end of Williamsons Rd Maribrynong (near the corner of Central Park Ave). Huge place with a number of other buildings on the site. The main student accomadation building is pretty trashed. It's set out in a large segmented circle with 100+ rooms set out over 2 levels. There's a large hall which could have been used for meals as there's a large kitchen attached to that area. There's also some offices which were the former "Footscray Skillshare" site. And some other smaller offshoot buildings to explore. Worth checking out if you get a chance. There's a bit of info on the place "here". Thanks Jahns for this one.

House, 1344 Pinces Hyw, Hughesdale. Was out that way looking for something else and stumbled across this house. Looks like there was a small fire in the roof or something. There was still a fair bit of stuff left behind, clothes, toys, furniture. Overall not much to see.

SBA Foods, 65 Kyle Rd, Altona North. This is a huge site. There's a 3 storey office building next to the main gate. Take a torch because the lower levels are pretty dark. There's a few smaller buildings that run down Kyle Rd. one of them was a "direct to public" wholesale store. And there's another 2 buildings out in the paddock. From what I've been told the old skeletal building out the back was the former abattoir. I love when you peek around a corner and it's not what your expecting. Like the small shed / building near the wholesale store. I was expecting just some boring storage shed, but when I looked in I was suprised to see that it dropped down another level into this strange drainage system. It's a bit hard to show you the place with just 6 pics, but there's some more history "here" (it was also known as Gilbertsons Meat Processing Complex).

Aged care facility, 317 Canterbury Rd. Ringwood. According to their brochure "Care Life Australia, is a 50 bed supported residential service. We are registered with the Department of Human Services. The facility has 24hr accommodation and assistance for the elderly". Interesting place. Doesn't look like it's been abandoned for very long. There's still a fair bit of furniture in the rooms. Some flour, cereal, and other bits of food and containers in the kitchen. The front of the building is 2 storeys, the rest of the place spreads out over a single level.
The place next door to this one is empty as well, but I ran out of time and didn't get a chance to have a look if you could get in.

Woolen Mills, 2 Banool Ave, Yarraville. Huge site, completely trashed with graff. There were 4 really large rooms, some upstairs areas, office space, change rooms and so on. Shop fronts, 10 Moray St. Southbank / Sth Melbourne. Just a small site (it's where "Strictly BMX" used to be). It's all been gutted. There's some earth moving equipment in there and other stuff. There was a medium size room upstairs (that's the pic with my feeble attempt at some light painting). You'll need to scout around for a ladder because the stairs have been removed. Overall not that much to see

John Valves, corner of Norman St. and Creswick Rd. Wendouree. It's a huge site. Down the back is an enormous shed that looked like it was the foundry area. There's a couple other little buildings near it and some small rooms that lead off the main building. There's some single storey buildings that run along Norman St. In them were some workshops as well as storage for hundreds of valve die casts (which were still there). There were some other sections that I couldn't get to because of security. In the centre of the site was a large open area where they probably kept some of the larger valve's and had parking for the employees. Up towards Creswick Rd. was the office area and another enormous shed which looked like it might be the finishing area. The office area was pretty smashed up. Would have liked to explore it more but the security is really tight there. There was a security guard driving around constantly. He'd go down one end for 10 mins then he'd come back up, and so on. Anyways, thanks Jesse for the hook up, it was an interesting site.

Norvil Foundry, corner of Norman St. and Creswick Rd. Wendouree. Only a smallish place. Big open area out the back and some small offices and change rooms towards the front. It had some great equipment still in there. There was an archaic kiln/furnace, big indoor silo, unusual electric switchboard compartments, and old boilers. Worth checking out if you go to "John Valve's" (I'll post that next).

Grain Silo's, near the corner of Gregory St. and Martin Ave, Ballarat/Wendouree. Looks like a lot has already been pulled down, but the silo's are still there. There was a big one with a group of about 24 silo's and another smaller one with a group of only 6. Couldn't get into the big one as the entry was well locked up and the basement was flooded, so I didn't bother trying to get in that way. The smaller one was easy to access. It had an old wooden staircase and a great view from the top. Was surprised to see a back hoe on the roof, but then again you do come across some strange stuff in abando's.

Explosives Storage Facility, Greenvale / Roxburgh Park. There's some great history about the place here: (RANAD Someton)
I got there by following a path/road that leads across the paddocks at the corner of James Miriams Dve and Aitken Blvd, Roxburgh Park. There's a lot of buildings spread over a wide area. I took my bike and rode around in there which made it a lot easier. If I go by the numbers on the front of the buildings, there's roughly 16 main shacks and a few little one's in total. Some are just simple timber ones, while some of the smaller ones are sturdy brick constructions. It's an unusual place - not much to see inside the buildings but was fun to ride around. There was also lot's of cows wandering around in there which was a strange site.

Here's one for the crap pile. Found a whole bunch of stickers so I thought I'd do a piece with them. Didn't turn out as good as I thought it would.
-Ran out of stickers and had to use some other ones
-Letter proportions are out
-Lines are wonky (it doesn't show in the pic, but trust me they are)
-Ran out of paint (was using a dark green for final but had to finish off with black)
-And I don't think the end bit works as well as the front bit

Bayside Hotel, 65 Ormond Esplanade, Elwood. 3 storey building with a bunch of small rooms on each level. The ground floor has a kitchen and what I assume was a dining area, as well as what might have been a lounge / TV area. Not sure what they're doing with this place. It's been gutted to some extent inside and there's a large bin out the back. All the internal doors for the rooms are stacked up together, so I don't know if they're going to use them again or what. Foundry, 6-8 Dunstans Crt, Thomastown. Half the front section of the site is still in use by another company. It's a large site that goes all the way through to Dalton Rd. The office area at the front still has power connected. Out the back are a few large corrugated sheds. One of them has close to a hundred supermarket trolley's in it (don't know what for). I also found a bunch of text based industrial stencils which will come in handy for my art work. There's really not much to see there, but it's an o.k place for a wander around if your in the area. You might need to take pliers with the wire cutter thingy in it (or some other lite wire cutters) because they do patch up the hole in the fence from time to time.

Brickworks, Corner of Dawson St. and Brickworks Dve. Brunswick. Another beautiful old space. Amazing timber structure in the main building and old industrial machines. Take a torch if you want to explore around the machines because it is a bit dark. Next to the main building are two large kilns with easy access to both the top and bottom parts of the kiln. Worth checking out if your in the area.

Brickworks, 15 Federation St, Box Hill. This place ticked all the right boxes with me. Archaic industrial machinery, old red brick walls, really high ceilings, old timber flooring and staircases, rusted corrugated iron sheeting and dirt floors. This place reminded me of the old Russian movie by Tarkovsky called "Stalker". Unfortunately my camera battery ran out while I was there and I didn't get any pics of the kiln next to it, but that was an interesting space as well. On the down side I did bump into a young guy who said he was living in the very top bit (which I would have liked to see) but if you stay out of his space he seems pretty cool. Thanks Dre for the heads up on this one.

California Hotel, 138 Barkers Rd, Hawthorn. (known to the locals as "Motel Hell"). Pretty good place for a wander around. It's really trashed, but there's 50+ hotel type rooms over two levels. Once you've seen one room you've seen them all. There's a swimming pool and spa if you want to go for a swim, but I don't recommend it. And at the front there's the remains of a restaurant / bar, and some office space. Thanks Jesse for letting me know about this one.

61 Islington St, Collingwood. Roughly 6 storey high silo's. There's a pretty good view from the roof. Take a torch if you want to explore around the base of the silo's. There's also a 3 level building attached to the silos to explore. I strongly suggest jumping over the temporary fencing and going up the stairs and into the buildings next door. It has some good spaces and is much cleaner than the silo side. Also there is another silo just up the road from this one in Robert St. (it's bigger than the Islington St one). It's a bit harder to get into but well worth it.

Had some fun down at the ABC studio's in Elsternwick. A group of us were asked to paint one of the meeting rooms. This is what happened .......

James Coppell Lee Foundry, 500 LaTrobe St, city (enter from Jeffcott St). Was surprised to find you could still get into this building. It was used in about 2005 for an "Empty Show" (click here for an old article on empty shows) and was well locked up after it. It's a massive warehouse space. The majority is set out over one level and there are a couple of small upstairs areas as well. It's all been freshly painted with nice white walls. There's also some really beautiful old hook and pulley systems hanging from the roof in the main area. Not a bad place to have a look around.
